5 Hardy Houseplants That Can Withstand Winter Season

Wondering if you can still grow houseplants during winter? Well, here's the good news: there are loads of houseplants that can thrive all year long and can withstand cold months, thermostat heat, and minimal sunlight!

In this guide, we will take a look at some of the toughest houseplants that can survive long, cold winters even with little care. Even if you're a planting beginner, we assure you, you won't have a hard time growing these plants in the middle of the winter season.

Here are 5 plants that can withstand everything from cool windowsills to thermostat wars and even minimal sunlight.

CLIVIA

Best Winter Plants

Why we love it:

  • Beautiful blooms even during winter
  • Can survive low light and drafty rooms
  • Doesn't need much watering
  • Vibrant flowers to brighten chilly spaces

Clivia is one tough plant that can be grown indoors or outdoors. Aside from it being able to withstand the change in season and temperature, it will also even give you its trumpet-shaped vibrant orange to red blooms (sometimes pale orange) during winter as it prefers the chilly temp.

The best part is that you will have no problem seeing it bloom all year round, as long as you water them enough. Don't worry though, they like to be kept on the dry side so you don't need a strict watering routine for this, just drain the soil regularly and you're all set!

JADE PLANT

Best Winter Plants

Why we love it:

  • Can withstand temperature changes

  • Only requires frequent watering

  • Looks like a beautiful miniature tree

  • Can tolerate low-light environment

If you love a beautiful piece in your home that kind of has an oriental feel to it, the Jade plant is the perfect tough plant for you this winter! It starts as a plant baby and as it ages, it will grow and take on a shape of a beautiful mini tree with its striking leaves and woody stems.

Like other easy-to-grow plants, the Jade plant can tolerate a combination of hot and cold air so it'll remain alright even during winter with your heater on. Ideally, they should be grown with full sun but it will be fine near an open window and it can even tolerate low-light environments. It also doesn't need frequent watering as its leaves can store water especially in dry months and prefers well-drained soil, so you can just water once every three weeks or whenever the soil is almost completely dry to touch

SNAKE PLANT

Best Winter Plants

Why we love it:

  • Can adapt to different lighting conditions
  • Thrives indoor
  • Structural look and beautiful leaves
  • Drought-tolerant

If you don't have a lot of time to spare for indoor planting but still want to keep a real houseplant to add vitality to your space during gloomy winter months, we suggest you go for the Snake plant or Sansevieria. They are known for thick blade-like leaves that grow upright which come in a diverse range of colors (from solid green to leave with splashes of yellow or white) and patterns that offer not just beauty but also air-purifying benefits.

What makes Snakeplants one of the best houseplants to grow is that it's very resilient and can tolerate different lighting conditions and doesn't require a strict watering routine (water them once every four weeks and they can live on their own!). And during the winter season, they can withstand drafty windows, heat from heaters and radiators, and the decrease in humidity. Even plant insects are a no match for them!

ZZ PLANT

Best Winter Plants

Why we love it:

  • Thrives even in dimly lit areas
  • Tolerates both damp and dry environments
  • Structural look and beautiful leaves
  • Drought-tolerant

If your home tends to be on the drier side with hot temps from the heater during the winter months, then this plant will be the most ideal in your home! This is also perfect if you prefer smaller plants that don't grow to take up a whole space (we're sure you know what we're talking about if you have a Monstera at home!)

ZZ plants can survive dimly lit areas so you won't have anything to worry about if your space gets low light during winter. Once spring and summer start, be careful not to put it in direct sunlight as bright light could burn its beautiful thich rubbery leaves. Another thing you need to be sure of is not to overwater. Give it a drink only when the soil is completely parched.

POTHOS

Best Winter Plants

Why we love it:

  • Plant beginner-friendly
  • Requires minimal care
  • Can handle fluctuating temperatures
  • Easy to propagate (best gift for plant-lovers!)

If your aesthetic is something like a dreamy indoor jungle surrounded by beautiful plants even during winter, then Pothos is a great plant to add to your collection! This tough beautiful trailing plant comes in different varieties with colors ranging from white, yellow, or pale green variegations on the green foliage which can help make your winter space feel a bit more vibrant and brighter during winter.

Pothos will grow even with minimal care and light and watering. You can water them whenever the soil feels dry - it can be once every 2-3 weeks in winter. Temperature isn't also a big deal for them as long as you keep them away from vents of the heater and air conditioning. You just need to make sure that you trim them often if you want to keep a neat look in your so, otherwise, it will grow long and overtake some spots in your home. The clippings are great for gifting to plant lover friends as you can just place them in water, propagate and replant once they grow roots.

We hope we are able to encourage you to bring a little bit of nature into your home and spruce up your space for the winter season. Plants are always a great element to add in any space especially during the cold months when we cannot go outside that much, so why not bring the outside in, right?
