A Quick Handy Guide To Find Your Personal Home Decorating Style
Want to add personal touches to your home but don’t actually know where to start? The struggle is real, we know!
With so many different decor styles, it can be challenging to choose the perfect one that suits your taste. What works for other people may not work well for you because everyone has different preferences when it comes to interior design.
Sure, you can always mix and match and try again, but it can be costly to redecorate over and over again. That’s why it’s important to know your design preference first before you can actually add personal touches to your home — but how can you do this exactly?
No worries, we’ve got your back! We’ve been through this, and we’re more than happy to share with you how we’ve found our design preference. Here’s a quick handy guide to decorate your home with your personal touches if you have no idea where to start.
Host your own Q&A
There’s no other way to find your personal style than to ask yourself! What do you really want? Do you have the budget to keep updating your decorations? Perhaps, you’re looking for some long-term touches to last you through the years? These are essential questions only you can answer.
What is your everyday lifestyle that you want to get reflected in your space? Do you have photographs, artworks, or some hand-me-down furniture and decorations that you want to display?
Whatever personal touches you can think of, add them to your space! These may not be what you usually see on the internet, but these are what make your space you!
Create your vision board
To organize your preferences, create your own vision board. List all the colors, motifs, themes, materials, and decorations you like. Look in your wardrobe, and other personal possessions to help you identify the things you are drawn to.
When choosing a color scheme, you may want to think also about how you want your space to feel. For example, red, orange, yellow can be energetic, blue and green can be soothing, while white and beige can be calming.
You can also look up different interior decor styles and save or print out the ones you like. Here are some:
- Mid Century Modern
Make sure to skim through different magazines too! They may not be as popular now, but they list some important professional information that can be hard to find on the internet.
When I was redecorating my home, I placed all my inspirations on my bulletin board. I find the common denominator in these designs (like repeating colors, furniture styles, types of materials, prints) and that’s how I knew what personal touches I was going to add to my space. Finding these common threads will help you hone in on your vision and tie everything together.
Don’t irk to fill the empty spaces
Empty spaces are normal especially when you’re just finding the personal touches you want for your home. So, don’t irk to fill them! You may end up cluttering your space if you always find a decoration to fill them up.
Do your research and take your time to find the right pieces. This is especially handy if you’re on a tight budget. You may be able to save up and find more affordable alternatives for the personal touches you can add at home. But no worries, there are plenty of things you can do! There’s never enough shopping when it comes to your home decorations. There are always better alternatives out there! However, you may need to find a balance between shopping for more and settling for an already good deal you’ve found.
Of course, everyone is excited to have new furniture in their home but not everyone has the budget for this. Thrifting can go a long way to save you a few bucks. The best part is, you can actually score some good finds if you look hard enough.
With your design preference in mind, it’s also easier to make retouches to the furniture you bought at the thrift store. If you’re having a hard time finding furniture pieces, you can always search for them at online shops like Craigslist, Instagram Shop, and Facebook Marketplace. Trust me, they have some great finds with unique and striking designs.
Here’s a little secret, I actually got my couch from a thrift store too! I had to do some cleaning and repainting, but it’s worth it as I get the result I want for a quarter of the price when I’ll buy it brand new!
Don’t get fazed with your preferences
It’s normal to have more than one design preference! If you’re struggling to settle for one interior design only, don’t be! As mentioned, you can always mix and match. You just have to be smart on how to execute them.
There’s more than one area at home. You can choose white walls for the living room, and paint green walls in your bedroom — it’s up to you! Of course, this doesn’t just include walls, but also the flooring in your space.
This works great because not only you can mix and match but also break the monotony of your home design. It’s a win-win situation for you as you get to experiment with all the personal touches and design preferences you like.
But before you mix and match anything, you may want to consider also how you want the room to function and how it ties up with your lifestyle. You can choose white walls for your bedroom to keep things chill, or have unique statement pieces in your living room which can be conversation starters when guests come over.
Personally, I’d like to keep my space simple. I prefer classic pieces that can withstand time and trends which is the main reason why I started Alfie & Gem and curated minimalistic home decor pieces. But if this doesn’t float your boat, feel free to add your personal touches! It’s your home, after all!
